How To Get Rid Of Spider Mites

Watch our detailed video about how to get rid of Spider Mites on indoor plants.

Spider mites are very active during the Spring and Summer. The stressed, dehydrated, and dusty plant is the most desirable vacation spot for mites.

    Signs of Spider Mites Infestation:

How To Get Rid Of Spider Mites

    • leaves have lost vibrance and look grayish
    • yellow leaf discoloration
    • webbings
    • it feels like leaves are covered with “fine sand” when you touch them

Light to moderate infestation can be successfully treated.

I would recommend considering discarding a heavily infested plant, replacing it with a new one, and get a fresh start.

Heavy infestation is much harder to control, and it puts all other plants in danger.

For Spider Mites Treatment You Will Need:

    1. Gloves
    2. 70% rubbing alcohol
    3. Dawn dish soap
    4. Spray bottle or Energy sprayer for a more powerful stream.
    5. Bowl or watering can
    6. Scissors
    7. Water
    8. Paper towels

    Spider Mites Treatment

    Step 1

Remove leaves that are heavily infested.

    Step 2

    Clean the plant.

Use mixture of alcohol and water to remove and kill visible spider mites.

Dilute 1 cup of alcohol in 30 oz of water and pour this solution in the spray bottle.

Spray both sides of leaves well and wipe them off with the paper towel.

    Step 3

Treat the plant with a special solution.

Applying the solution will help the plant to stay free of returning infestation and kill more mites and eggs where they are not visible.

We have a couple of options here:

    Option 1

    Dish soap and alcohol solution.

Mix 1 cup of alcohol and few drops of dish soap in 30 oz of water. Pour the mixture in the spray bottle.

    Option 2

    Mite Massacre all-natural spray concentrate.

It is made with a unique oil soap blend with pesticidal and fungicidal properties.

Spray the whole plant well. Make sure to apply the solution to both sides of leaves and plant stems as well.

Repeat the treatment twice a week until the issue is gone.

    HOW TO PREVENT AN INFESTATION

    • Before bringing a new plant or moving a plant back indoors from outside, make sure to closely examine it.
    • Establish a regular (once every 7-10 days) check-up routine.
    • Wipe leaves top and under, and stems with a moist paper towel at least once every two weeks. Weekly is better!
    • Misting leaves often with water helps to keep the spider mites away.
    • Do not allow your plant to get dehydrated.
    • Use Neem Oil as a preventative measure. It repels many harmful insects and mites. The most beneficial time to use Neem Oil is during Spring and Summer.
    • Lightly spray leaves top and under and stems with Neem Oil on average once every 2 weeks.
